The effect of light

Kitchen lighting: how light transforms a space

Light shapes the way we experience a kitchen. It provides brightness where it is needed, brings materials to life and changes the atmosphere of a room throughout the day. In open-plan kitchens in particular, lighting becomes an important part of the overall design.
At pronorm, lighting is therefore considered from the very beginning of the kitchen planning process. Integrated into wall units, wall-mounted shelves, shelving units, display cabinets and recesses, positioned above kitchen islands or introduced through carefully placed spotlights, lighting accents combine functionality with atmosphere.

Good task lighting provides clear visibility across the worktop when preparing food and cooking. At the same time, illuminated wall-mounted shelves, shelving units and display cabinets add depth to the room and draw attention to selected areas.

Lighting becomes an integral part of the kitchen's architecture. It emphasises clean lines, provides visual orientation and allows surfaces to reveal different qualities as the light changes.

Illuminated handle profiles as a design feature

This is particularly evident in pronorm's handleless Y-line and X-line kitchens. Here, lighting is integrated directly into the handle profiles, emphasising the horizontal and vertical lines of the kitchen.

The lighting is subtle and precise. It gently highlights materials and surfaces while creating a harmonious transition between the kitchen and living area, particularly in open-plan spaces.

Bright and functional in the morning, warm and understated in the evening: different light sources can transform the atmosphere of a kitchen with just a few simple adjustments. Spotlights, integrated lighting and indirect lighting accents can be combined to create the right atmosphere for every moment.

Good kitchen lighting does more than simply illuminate a room. It gives the space character, highlights thoughtful details and helps create a kitchen that feels just right for the way you want to live.

FAQ: Kitchen lighting planning

Would you like to know what matters when planning your kitchen lighting? In our FAQ, we answer the most important questions about kitchen lighting, different light sources and creating the right atmosphere.

Good kitchen lighting begins with the design of the space itself. Rather than being added as a final detail, lighting should be considered from the very beginning of the kitchen planning process. This ensures that work areas are well illuminated while also allowing atmospheric lighting accents to be incorporated.

Start by considering how you use your kitchen and which areas need the most light. Where do you cook, prepare ingredients or wash up? Where would you like to create a more relaxed atmosphere?
Ideally, the kitchen and its lighting should be planned together. This allows electrical connections, light sources and switches to be considered at an early stage. Planning ahead is particularly important when incorporating integrated lighting solutions.

For effective kitchen lighting, a combination of three types of lighting is recommended:

  • Ambient lighting: ceiling lights or recessed spotlights provide even illumination throughout the room and make it easy to find your way around.
  • Task lighting: LED lights beneath wall units or integrated lighting solutions illuminate the worktop, hob and sink, providing clear visibility while minimising shadows.
  • Accent lighting: illuminated wall-mounted shelves, display cabinets, shelving units and handle profiles create distinctive highlights and a welcoming atmosphere.

Alongside the positioning of light sources, colour temperature plays an important role. Warm white light creates a cosy, inviting atmosphere, while neutral white light is particularly suitable for work areas. Individually controlled and dimmable light sources allow the lighting to be adjusted to suit different activities and times of day.
At pronorm, both functional and atmospheric lighting solutions can be integrated directly into the kitchen design. From illuminated wall-mounted shelves and display cabinets to integrated handle profile lighting in the Y-line and X-line ranges, individual lighting concepts bring together design and a welcoming sense of home.
